FRANCISTOWN: Residents here say the new Francistown stadium deserves a better name after the Minister of Youth, Sport and Culture, Thapelo Olopeng announced the facility will be known as the Francistown Sports Complex.

Mmegi Sport took to the Francistown streets for a snap survey and some residents felt a better name honouring or reflecting the history of the city would have been appropriate.

Kenosi Sekelemani (30) is of the view that the name does not befit the status of the new stadium.

“Rather it should have been named after Francistown sports legends or any other historical names such as John Nswazwi Stadium, Nyangabgwe Stadium among others. “Also the new stadium is not a complex because a complex is something that consists of many sports facilities. If our stadium catered for different codes such as swimming, basketball and volleyball among others, then we would have understood,” he said.

Kedibonye Gaolathe (32) said the name was ‘wrong’.

“This is very wrong; just recently we were asked to come up with suggestion for the name by Minister Olopeng via his Facebook page, but never did we suggest that name.

“Why did they ask for our opinions if they knew that they already had a name. I just hate the new name.”

Moeti Malanga (28) said consultation would have been the way to go in coming up with a new name.

“It is not what we expected for our beloved stadium. We expected something more meaningful,” Malanga said. Poloko Gaoswediwe (26) said it was inappropriate to name it a sports complex.

“Go to Masunga and Molepolole if you want to see Sports complex not our stadium. It seriously needed an exceptional name. We are not happy as Francistown residents; we really hope they do change that boring name,” he said.

However, Tebogo Nkarabang differed. She feels the name is fine since the new stadium is open to different sports activities. She said it is much better than other suggested names such as Nyangabgwe Stadium.

“I feel that the name Nyangabgwe is over used so Francistown Sports Complex is the best name more so that it does not have any political spin from it. I like the new name,” she said.
