BDP youth want revamped Bulela Ditswe

If all goes according to the wishes of the youth, the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) will introduce changes to the Bulela Ditswe primary elections. The youth are proposing that in the next primaries, the party should adopt a system similar to one used by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to conduct national elections.

If this plan succeeds, the BDP members will be required to register to vote in internal party elections.  Secondly, a member has to appear in the two voters roll, national and constituency one. This will be done to curb opposition intruders who vote in the primaries only to favour a weak candidate whereas they are not BDP members. Therefore the BDP office will provide constituencies with a membership roll and constituencies will also have theirs to compare.

“It is true we took that resolution over the weekend. Only the party council has powers to adopt our proposal. I cannot disclose much information because we are still going to table it before the council. We hope this will bring transparency and peace within our party since people previously complained about the Bulela Ditswe process,” said the BDP National Youth Executive Committee chairperson, Andy Boatile.    This was one of the resolutions taken at the youth council in Mosu over the weekend. However a source said some BDP members have been advocating the same process since the special congress in Gaborone last year.
