UDC's 100 Days: Please deliver your promises!

On Sunday, the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) will be hitting the first 100 days as a governing party after winning the historic October 2024 General Election.

We duly congratulate them to have ousted the long ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) from power. Prior to taking power from the BDP, the coalition had made several election promises that are credited for influencing change and swaying the people to vote in its favour.

The party had made an undertaking, which its leader and President Duma Boko consistently bellowed in his campaign trail. These undertakings were promises that Batswana would be guaranteed better lives under the UDC rule. However, without being harsh to the coalition, this has been a rough ride without much to write home about.

While being a new administration that inherited government machinery from the previous regime can be a reason, the UDC somewhat slipped to hit the ground running. There is still no clear manuscript or roadmap that the UDC government plans to use to guide this country from the state it is in. Take for example, the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump who in his first day hit the ground running by utilising executive powers he is vested with. This inspired confidence in those who voted for him that the work to rebuild America has indeed begun. The UDC government should prove its mettle and take the country from the state we hear it is in as the wheel of developments has grounded to a halt as the country is reportedly struggling financially. The new government should move fast to remedy the situation as it was one of their pledges to take this nation to the land of milk and honey.

Many projects the previous administration had commenced have been literally grounded to a halt as Botswana was in no position to effectively continue with them but to deal with other priorities. A government amongst others is judged by its pace of executing its priorities and most importantly election pledges that helped it win the polls. Going into the 2024 General Election, the UDC team sold itself very well to the masses and voters were convinced they were in good hands.

It must also be noted that it is not too late for the UDC government to prove to all and sundry what it is made of. Batswana are also waiting with baited breath for the promises that the coalition government has made to them when it took office. We also remember that the UDC distributed its manifesto widely to the people and it is those pledges that people are crying for their delivery.

The Minister for State President has been quoted in the local media saying they are not a 100 days government. Yes, we agree, but remember President Boko promised people who voted his party that his government will show light at the end of the tunnel in the first 100 days. Please deliver your promises!
