South Africa is the winner of this year's Zone IV Boxing Championships that ended on Saturday.

They took the title from Botswana who finished second. Other countries that participated in the tournament are Namibia, Mozambique, Swaziland, Angola, Zambia and Zimbabwe. For the first time in the history of the championships, there was a women category, won by Mozambique.Even though it was their first time to participate in the tournament, the women boxers gave an impressive account of themselves. In the men's event, the opening bout pitted Botswana's Lekgetho Mooketsi against Maquina Julio Gento of Mozambique in the light flyweight division.   Julio Gento won but all was not lost for the hosts.

One of the most exciting fights was the bout between Botswana's Olympian Oteng Oteng and Angola's Vivaldo Rodrigues in the flyweight division.  The fully-packed Gaborone West Community Hall was roaring as Oteng bombarded his opponent with a barrage of blows in the first round. At some stage, Oteng nearly knocked out the Angolan as he sent him sprawling on the canvas.  Oteng's experience was just too much for his opponent and it was not a surprise that he was declared the winner at the end of the fight.
