Montsho too Fast for America

World Champion Amantle Montsho was in a class of her own winning the women 400 metre Prefontaine Classic in the IAAF Samsung Diamond League series in Eugene, Oregon, Saturday.

The win was her second in a space of a week in the USA after sweeping off the New York Adidas Grand Prix the previous weekend. Montsho clocked a time of 50.01. Despite being slightly slower than her NY time of 49.91, where she set a new area record, she still  extended her lead in the league and now looks set to win her third consecutive title having won all her last three races in the league.

The 29-year looks to have reached a rich vein of form at the peak of her career. She won her first race in Doha last month and was the only one to clock a sub-50s. In Eugene, she faced stiff competition from Great Britain's Christine Ohuruogo and American Sanya Richards-Ross who was making a return to the track after a long injury layoff. The two beat her to the medal table at last year's Olympics. She was however, not deterred by the presence of the two in the starting list to win the race. Ohuruogo finished fourth with a time of 51.31 while Olympic gold winner Richards-Ross came last with a disappointing 53.77.
