Botswana Rugby Union (BRU) development manager, Zilwele Khumalo leaves his post today to join the Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) as a training and development manager.

Khumalo, who was first appointed as a BRU development officer in 1997, has been development manager since 2005.He told Mmegi Sport that he had to take up a bigger challenge."I need to move to a bigger union and get more experience," Khumalo said.He is elated that he leaves behind a crop of players who have graduated from the development program to play in the senior team. Some of the players who participated in the CAR Group1C tournament held in Gaborone recently are products of the development programme. Khumalo believes Botswana rugby is moving in the right direction and players need more game time and exposure at a higher level.

Khumalo said the lack of union grounds posed the biggest challenge to conducting smooth coaching clinics during his tenure. When he arrived, there were only five schools playing rugby but the number has swelled to about 120.After attending the International Rugby Board (IRB), he trained a number of local coaches and referees. However, indications are that Khumalo leaves the Union with a heavy heart and was not entirely pleased with the treatment he received during his stint.
