'Butcher' vows to stop bone-crunching tackles

Gaborone United (GU) player, Tumisang 'Butcher' Sekanonyana has a reputation as a feared defender because his bone-crunching tackles often leave his opponents writhing in agony.

This has often attracted the attention of referees and in some instances, he has complained that he is being targeted by match officials. His play often triggers debate with some labelling him a rough defender while others have argued that the referees are unfair to him.  However, some of his coaches have acknowledged that he is a rough customer. Former Under-23 coach Isaiah Mogwadi nicknamed  Sekanonyana the 'Butcher' after he saw the youngster charging at a teammate during one of the Young Zebras' training sessions. The name has since stuck with the defender.

Sekanonyana says the nickname is like a curse to him. He alleges that referees have been influenced to judge him badly just because of the nickname. The defender was at it again on Saturday when his team lost 3-0 to Mochudi Centre Chiefs. First he got a yellow card for a rough tackle on Pontsho Moloi in the first half before being sent off for another crunching challenge on the same player. Prior to his booking and ultimate sending off, he had been lucky on several occasions when he only attracted verbal warning from referee Joshua Bondo after bone-crushing tackles. But Sekanonyana still refuses to admit that he is a rough player arguing that he is just tough.
