Bowling masters tourney to be held this weekend

The Botswana Bowls Association (BBA) will host its Annual Single Masters Tournament at the Gaborone Bowls Club tomorrow and Sunday. BBA public relations officer, John Gaborutwe said the tournament is an elite competition meant to determine the ultimate champion of champions in both men's and women's categories.

He said that the eligible competitors are the current singles champions from each bowling club and their runners-up. "Zone Six would in future consider enrolling African states masters as an international tournament with each member authority sending their winners to compete at the Zone Six Champion of Champion masters championship and accordingly earn world ranking points in line with world bowls ranking system," said Gaborutwe.The ladies who are expected to battle it out are Ellie Geldenhuys of Orapa Bowls Club, Binkie Gaborutwe of Phikwe, Lebo Mascarenhas of Phikwe, Lesedi Mafoko of Jwaneng, Pauline Lekone who plays for Gaborone Bowls Club and Elandri Collington of Francistown.

Gaborutwe said Geldenhuys has been the Orapa singles champion for three years running while Binkie is the current ladies' singles champions for Phikwe Bowls Club. He explained that Mascarenhas has been invited to take part in the tournament because she is the current national singles champion.Mafoko is the current club champion for Jwaneng and is a debutant at the national masters championships. Lekone from Gaborone club will also be making her debut at the tournament and Collington is the reigning Under-25 youth championship silver medallist and current ladies singles champion for Francistown club.
