BCP Central Committee Position on Zimbabwe

The Central Committee of the Botswana Congress Party convened on 5 July, discussed among other things, the political developments in Zimbabwe.

The Central Committee, after receiving reports from BCP members who were part of the SADC observer Mission, made the following observations and resolutions:

The 27 June Presidential run-off election did not accord the people of Zimbabwe an opportunity to freely express their will. The period leading to the election was marred by state sponsored violence and intimidation, which resulted in loss of lives and displacement of innocent Zimbabweans. Consequently, the BCP Central Committee supports the decision by the Botswana government not to recognize the outcome of the June 27 presidential run-off election. BCP also applauds the decision by the Botswana government to call on SADC and the African Union to suspend Zimbabwe from all proceedings of the organizations until the political impasse is resolved.
