Party positions bought in BDP?

FRANCISTOWN: With only a month left to the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) congress in Maun, the fight for control of the party is developing into a confrontation between tenderpreneurship and ordinary activism.

Lately, it has been increasingly apparent that a lobby group dominated by young businessmen, otherwise known as tenderpreneurs, has taken the BDP by storm with its extravagant campaigns. It is alleged that party positions are being bought in the BDP. Reports say that Mpho Balopi who wants to be retained as secretary general, Guma Moyo wants to be chairman and Thapelo Olopeng who is eyeing the position of deputy treasurer are channelling heavy investment into the party to get elected. The massive amounts they are said to have poured in the campaigns have left some people wondering what they really stand to gain.

On the other hand, a group supporting Education Minister, Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi for the chairmanship has been depending on ordinary activism for their bid with a low-key campaign.  However, the group has found benefactors who are still faceless.
