Former president and outgoing Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) leader, Mokgweetsi Masisi, has accused the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) of lining up huge money tenders as pay back for their alleged financier, Zunaid Moti.

He is of the view that Moti and De Beers are financially behind his ouster from state power.

Masisi said this at a press conference this morning further adding that he is deeply concerned by what they warned the voting public and the rest of the country about towards the 2024 elections; that they "know the UDC in italics".

“We know their associates. We know who gave them the mandate to rule, there will be pay back time to their financiers. One very well-known financier of theirs since 2019 is a gentleman named Mr Moti, a South African billionaire. He supported them. We have it on good authority that a contract is being signed with companies he owns or is associated with. Huge amounts of money. We doubt the credibility or integrity of the procurement,” Masisi said.

He averred they knew that something was being searched for to pay back (the piper), particularly when a lot of noise was made about the integrity of the process of appointing Development Managers or even the value of their works. He emphasised that they followed the law when appointing them and paid appropriately.

UDC spokesperson Moeti Mohwasa dismissed the idea they were paying anyone back for anything. “Moti long financed us in 2019. Besides that we are open to do business with anyone who would bring value to our economy. We are doing a lot of business with people not because of funding us or belonging to our party. We still sign contracts with well-known BDP members because all we want is goods and services to improve lives," he said.
