President Mokgweetsi Masisi will this Saturday officially welcome Member of Parliament, Aubrey Lesaso in Shoshong following his defection to the ruling party.
Lesaso jumped ship from the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) and joined the BDP last year. The much-anticipated welcome was initially postponed in 2022 due to bad weather.
According to the party spokesperson, Kagelelo Kentse, the celebration will help to motivate some BDP members who have not been active in the area to start working for the party.
"As the BDP, we do not leave any stone unturned since we want to reclaim some of our constituencies that we lost to opposition parties,” Kentse said.
Shoshong used to be one of the BDP strongholds but the party only lost it to the opposition during the 2019 general election after a fallout between former president, Ian Khama and President Masisi. The fallout also contributed to the BDP losing the area as it is one of the conservative Gammangwato areas.
Khama is Bangwato Kgosi and currently he is the patron of Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF).
