The Ipelegeng programme in Gaborone area has benefitted 21,637 individuals of which 14,010 are females and 7,627 are males, city mayor, Kagiso Thutlwe has said. In an interview, the mayor said preparations were ongoing for implementation of the programme in the next financial year.

He also revealed that the allocated budget for the programme in Gaborone for 2016/17 had declined by three percent to P19 million.

Thutlwe said the reduction implies that the city will focus mainly on labour intensive projects unlike in the past when they had a number of projects. On poverty eradication programme, the mayor said the reason why they had given people equipment and materials with incomplete packages was due to financial constraints. “We had 110 people who had incomplete packages, 73 people thus been provided with complete packages to start their projects. Procurement is ongoing and is expected to have been completed by end of this quarter for the remaining beneficiaries,” he said.
