GOVT RELOCATES 29 FROM RANYANE

Twenty-nine residents from Ranyane village, a Basarwa settlement in the Gantsi District were on Saturday relocated, according to government press statements.

The relocation of the 29 residents along with their 129 cattle and 77 goats comes two weeks after the High Court ordered government to stop the relocation.  The relocation proceeded even after the Basarwa and Bakgalagadi residents of Ranyane, with the help of Ditshwanelo, sought urgent court intervention as the government prepared to forcibly relocate the tribe to Bere.However, on Saturday the executive secretary of the Khweidom Council, a council for all Basarwa in Botswana, Keikabile Mogodu, described the continued relocation of Ranyane residents as a violation of the Court order.

Mogodu said despite the court ordeR government officials have now been camping at Ranyane to entice gullible villagers into moving out of their village.Since the court order, there have been three relocations of residents and their livestock announced by the government. The first two were said to be the voluntary relocation of three families last week, followed by five more, bringing to 11 the total number of families relocated from Ranyane, according to government spokesman, Dr Jeff Ramsay.
