Foreign inmates take govt to court

Botswana remains the only country in Africa that will not provide 'incarcerated' persons, among them prison inmates and refugees, with Antiretroviral treatment.

It is in light of the fact that it remains adamant that it will not give foreign prisoners treatment that the Botswana Network on Ethics and Law (BONELA) is taking government to court, to compel it to change this policy. BONELA is expected to file the case next week.

"We will be submitting an application for a declaratory order which says that the practice by the government to deny foreign prisoners access to ARV is in violation of the constitution of Botswana," he said.
