Whilst Botswana People’s Party (BPP) president and Umbrella for Democratic Change's (UDC) Motlatsi Molapisi hasn't been given any political or public office position, President Duma Boko has showered him with praises for his role in keeping the coalition intact.
Speaking during the UDC Gala Dinner in Gaborone over the weekend, Boko started by apologising for his Vice President Ndaba Gaolathe’s absence and acknowledging his dedication and the tireless efforts of his team. He would then immediately make it clear that they had gathered not only to celebrate their collective journey but also to honour a man whose wisdom, loyalty, and steadfast support have been instrumental in shaping their movement in veteran politician Molapisi. “There were times when I, regrettably, made myself scarce, deliberately avoiding his counsel, sending others in my place to gauge his thoughts and temperament. But through it all, he remained unwavering. His patience, resilience, and steadfast dedication never wavered. Over time, I came to realise the depth of his wisdom, and the sincerity of his guidance,” Boko said.
He said some may judge Molapisi by conventional standards, noting that he never walked the halls of a university. “But let me be unequivocal, his emotional intelligence, strategic acumen, and ability to navigate adversity are unmatched. He is a pillar of strength, an irreplaceable figure in our movement, and a man whose insights and counsel I hold in the highest regard. Any allegations against him are without merit,” he added. Boko said on many occasions Molapisi has spoken of him with such reverence that he has found himself humbled, striving to live up to the towering figure he describes.
He said his words have served as a source of encouragement and a reminder of the responsibility he carries. Turning to attendants, Boko said he saw a reflection of the unity they have fought so hard to build. “I recognise that in the past, some may have hesitated to stand with us. But your presence here speaks volumes, it is a testament to courage, conviction, and the unshakable belief that together, we can achieve greatness. I am honoured to stand before you. I am grateful for your unwavering support. Welcome, and let's continue this journey together.” Giving a word of advice, Pastor Mmoloki Mogokgwane called on Boko and the UDC to work hard to protect what they worked for. He said the people have trusted them with their hopes, their votes, their future.
He cautioned them that competitors are watching. “They are building a united front, brick by brick, while you risk crumbling under the weight of old habits. The next election is not guaranteed; it is not a gift waiting to be unwrapped. It’s a battle, and unity is your strongest weapon. If you bicker in public, if you air your grievances like laundry for all to see, you don’t just discredit yourselves, you hand your rivals the hammer to tear this house down,” he said. Mogokgwane said it is time to mature, stating that rulers don’t squabble like children in the streets. “They resolve their differences behind closed doors. You aren't a band of rebels anymore, you are stewards of a nation’s destiny. That word 'comrade' you cling to? It’s a relic of resistance, a whisper of the past. Let it go. You are not fighting against anymore, you are building for,” he said.
