Mpho Balopi has emerged as the new president of the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) following a strong victory in the party's presidential election, which took place over the weekend at The Life Centre Church in Maun.

Balopi won the election with 664 votes, comfortably defeating former BDP chairman and former vice president Slumber Tsogwane, who managed only 60 votes. Ame Makoba and Nonofo Molefhi secured 29 and seven votes, respectively.

Despite a landslide victory, Balopi admitted in a post-election interview that he had not expected such a result. "I did not expect that," he said, reflecting on the strong support he received. However, many BDP members had already expressed their confidence in Balopi as the person to lead the party into the 2029 General Election.
