A Catfight As Cousins Wrestle For Land

A bitter catfight has ensued at Gamonoyane, a small settlement located 5kms from Metsimotlhabe, along the Gaborone-Molepolole road where two cousins are wrestling for a prime piece of land.

The conflict, between Tlhokwe Semong and Mmadikgomo Babusi, which has been raging for years, reached boiling point recently when Semong was arrested and held in a cell at the Mogoditshane Police Station for contempt of court. Semong is puzzled after the discovery that his cousin, Babusi, has been officially allocated the contested plot and possesses a certificate for it though it has been declared that there would be no land allocations in Gamononyane until further notice. The dispute started around 1991-1992 when a late politician and prominent business man, showed up with a truck full of fencing material at the land, claiming Babusi had sold it to him.
Semong managed to send the businessman back and a family meeting convened to resolve the matter found that Babusi had no right over the piece of land. However, this never killed Babusi's ambitions.

According to a family member, her late mother, who was Semong's paternal aunt, apologised for her daughter's (Babusi's) behaviour at the time. The issue was rested, though only temporarily as Babusi was to reignite it in 2007 after the death of her mother. Apparently she was seeking help from Metsimotlhabe Kgotla. Semong was summoned and on arrival was told to give the field back to his cousin by Kgosi Mmipi. He ignored the order."I found that ridiculous because I was not even told if that was a case or a matter to reconcile us. Besides I could not because this is my land which I inherited from my late father," he said.
