Maliki the dog master

"I am the master, they are the trainers," that is the response one will get from Podimajwe Maliki if asked what he considers himself to be. A deserved title seeing as the 51-year-old has close to 27 years experience as a dog trainer.

Maliki has a basic certificate in dog handling from Goldfields Security Company in South Africa and in advanced specialised combined detection course. He worked in South Africa for eight years as a dog handler where he trained even the fiercest dogs. The Monitor team traces Maniki to hs workplace dubbed Maliki's Dog Care Centre, an open stretch in front of the Maharaja Restaurant and Conference Centre in Gaborone Block Three area. On this hot Friday afternoon, we find five large dogs; a black Rottweiler, two German shepherd crosses, and two Boer bulls in a wheeled trailer. The dogs belong to Maliki's clients.

Maliki only recently relocated his business from Molepolole in an attempt to make himself accessible to a broader market. The centre offers basic training for dogs starting with puppy training for those aged between five and seven months. He said in this course, which lasts up to three weeks, puppies are taught discipline, basic command, and handling. Upon completion of this stage, the dogs can proceed to adult training  where they are taught obedience and guard work. This part of the training can last up to four weeks. It is only after completing both these phases that dogs can proceed to advanced training; the course teaches more advanced guard work ranging from vehicle guard, tracking criminals from a crime scene and retrieving them to hand them over to the handler.
