FRANCISTOWN: Located at the confluence of the Tati and Ntshe Rivers, and only 90km from the Botswana-Zimbabwe border to the north and about 500km to Gaborone, the capital city to the South, is variously called the Ghetto, Toropo or the capital of the North.

Historians say the present town was founded in 1897 as a settlement near the Monarch mine.

Incidentally this is the year that Cecil John Rhodes’ railroad, the Cape-to-Cairo railway line reached Monarch.
