Have the hard lessons been learnt?

Eight out of country’s nine dams are full, including “stubborn” Gaborone Dam, which after proudly resisting for months, suddenly filled up in the space of a few days last week.

Batswana are rejoicing, the bountiful rain ushering in the promise of a better harvest, more money in the pockets of rural households, greater national food security and less reliance on Government social safety nets.

For many, the relief in the air was underlined by President Ian Khama leading Cabinet members, legislators, religious leaders and ordinary Batswana to a day of thanks-giving by the banks of Gaborone Dam on Sunday.
