Have fun responsibly

It is that time of the year again when thousands of fun lovers come together for the Toyota 1,000km Desert Race, popularly known as Mantshwabisi.

Over the years, the race has helped to put Botswana on the global map as one of the biggest sports spectacles in the region. Not only does it attract motorsport lovers, but fun and entertainment enthusiasts are also in the mix. Botswana Tourism, realising the big potential of the race, has in recent years come on board as a major stakeholder, in turn making the event a big tourism attraction.

Businesses, ranging from accommodation, catering and even transport make a kill during the event. However, a growing concern over the years has been the increasing number of criminal activities recorded at the event.  The organisers of the race have made sure it adheres to the highest safety standards, with very few direct injuries or even casualties associated with the event. But there have been very disturbing criminal incidents at the event.  The overnight revellersÕ camp in the first day of the main race has become the hub of most of these criminal activities ranging from rape, assault, theft, car break-ins and even murders.
