Artists welcome COSBOTS commissioning

Local artists have hailed the commissioning of the Copyright Society of Botswana (COSBOTS) as a welcome move.

COSBOTS will be collecting royalties for artists, which is a new development in the local music industry.  COSBOTS is being set up and last week its chief executive officer (CEO) was appointed.  Other key posts have also been advertised.  The posts might be filled this month so that the society becomes fully-operational almost immediately.  The newly-appointed CEO, Thato Mokobi, is busy setting up the secretariat.  COSBOTS has opened up offices in the old Industrial sites along the Old Lobatse Road.

Mokobi said COSBOTS would come to the rescue of artists.  He said they expect to collect royalties within six months after starting official business.  Afro jazz giant Socca Moruakgomo, who is also the president of the Botswana Musicians Union (BOMU), said the setting up of a collecting society was a welcome development.  He said it would make a difference to artists' lives if things were properly conducted.
