Township Rollers executive committee will put heads together to discuss the implications of the Botswana Football Association’s (BFA) recent reminder to clubs regarding the signing of foreign players.

The BFA sent out a reminder to clubs yesterday through a communiqué, on the rules and regulations about the signing of foreign players.

Rollers have been the most active team in the winter transfer window, bringing in three South African players, Siphamandla Sangweni, Thabo Rakhale, and Tshepo Matete.

However, the BFA reminded clubs that according to regulations, local sides can only sign players with three or more caps at a national level.

“This serves to inform all professional clubs that per Article 6.5.4 of Regulation on the Status and Transfer of Players a foreign player shall not be registered unless he has three or more caps in any of the national teams,” reads the letter from BFA address to regional football associations, the Botswana Football League, First Division South and North, and women’s football.

None of the players Rollers signed has been capped by Bafana Bafana, meaning the club is in breach of BFA rules. Rollers’ spokesperson, Pako Lebanna told Mmegi Sport they will meet as the executive to deliberate on the matter.

“At this point, we are still assessing the matter internally and if we need greater clarity we'll then engage the relevant structures within the association. As yet, we are unable to express a public opinion on the issue,” he said.
