FRANCISTOWN: Gambling Authority (GA) is pushing hard on responsible gambling with the local sports betting market booming.

The new phenomenon hit the local shores earlier this year and has the majority of Batswana turning into rather seasoned punters. In March 2025, local punters placed P150 million in wagers through licensed operators. With payouts of P135 million, the authority made P15 million in gross gambling revenue (GGR) for the month. This figure reflects only about 40% of the country’s estimated 550, 000 gamblers, which means an annual GGR could top P450 million if the remainder moves into the regulated space. It is, however, a welcome development but risk inheriting growth.

Speaking at the Clash of Legends, gala dinner on Friday, Gambling Authority chief executive officer, Peter Kesitiilwe highlighted the potential of betting in aiding the country’s economic growth but also advised the punters to know their limit. “As the gambling landscape evolves, particularly with the recent introduction of regulated online and retail betting, our role in ensuring public safety, consumer protection and informed gambling becomes even more critical.
