He was born in Poole, England on April 5, 1951.
He began his career as a Science Teacher at Tavistock Comprehensive School in Devon, in 1972; subsequently teaching at Seldon Secondary School, 1973-1976 in Dorset, where he became the Head of the Biology Department.
