Botswana Congress Party (BCP) publicity and information secretary Mpho Pheko has made a bold claim that the leading opposition party will emerge victorious at the Kgalagadi South by-elections on November 15.
The leading opposition party with 15 seats is vying for Kgalagadi South seat that was left vacant by the untimely death of Dr Micus Chimbombi, who passed a few months ago.
BCP has fielded Tshephang Brooks as their candidate but will have to face fierce competition from Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC), which won the seat during last year's General Election.
UDC has picked Joseph Modise as their candidate ahead of the by-elections.
Competition will also come from Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), which is in an advantageous position for fielding the same candidate, Diana Kaartze, who was vying for the seat against the late Chimbombi in the last elections.
Addressing the media, Pheko said BCP is brimming with confidence and belief that BCP will emerge victorious in the Kgalagadi South constituency.
“We have progressed really well in the Kgalagadi South constituency judging by the past weekend. We launched our candidate (Brooks) over the weekend, and he was warmly received,” Pheko said.
Pheko further said the party is oozing with confidence because voters are losing hope over the ruling UDC, which is yet to deliver on its manifesto promises.
“People of Kgalagadi South are crying out about the hardships they face in their constituency. They state that UDC, which they have given a chance to rule, is not honest with them. This from them,” she said.
Because of her assertion that people of Kgalagadi are losing patience with the UDC, Pheko said her party really has a great chance of clinching the seat from the ruling party.
“We do stand a very good chance though UDC says otherwise, but I want to say that we are going to do well. We will perform a miracle, not going to say, we are winning or not, but the response is very, very good,” Pheko said.
Meanwhile, the party secretary-general Goretetse Kekgonegile said the party will also hope to win the vacant council ward at Moremaoto in Boteti West. He revealed that the party has chosen Odirile Basiami as the candidate.
The by-election for the council seat is set for December 6.
