Speaker declines to intervene in BPF disputes

Speaker of the National Assembly, Dithapelo Keorapetse, has made it clear that his office will not intervene in Botswana Patriotic Front’s (BPF) internal disputes, citing conflicting communication from the party’s leadership and the need to respect institutional boundaries. He told Mmegi that his office has received close to six separate letters from different BPF leaders, each presenting differing positions regarding the party’s internal conflicts.

Consequently, Keorapetse said, it has become increasingly difficult for Parliament to determine a single, authoritative stance from the party.

“Our office does not mingle or interfere with the internal affairs of political parties,” he said in response to enquiries. “At present, only the courts can provide clear direction on the matter. The BPF must either resolve its internal issues or re-approach the courts for a definitive ruling.”
