A VW Polo driver and a passenger were killed in a road mishap near the Tropic of Capricorn along the A1 Highway on Friday night.

Dibete Police Station commander, Superintendent Meshack Ranku, said the accident occurred around 9:30pm when a truck driving south collided with the VW Polo heading north. He said the truck driver, aged 29, was accompanied by a single passenger, both sustaining minor injuries, treated, and released the same night.

“The VW Polo had five people on board: the 29-year-old driver, a native of Bobonong village, and four passengers,” Ranku said. “Two people lost their lives – the driver and one of the passengers, 24, who is a resident of Mogoditshane. Three other passengers, a 21-year-old woman, who resides in Glen Valley BDF camp and two women, aged 22, who are natives of Gobajango village, were also passengers. The passengers sustained serious injuries and are currently hospitalised at Mahalapye Hospital.” Ranku said the truck driver has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
