Retailers drag heels on VAT relief measures

The Value Added Tax (VAT) relief measures announced by government have generally not yet been reflected on most shop shelves, with only the prices of cooking oil declining, a snap survey of retailers and consumer sample by Mmegi this week has revealed.

The measures, announced by government last week, kicked in on Wednesday and are due to run until January.

Under the measures, cooking oil and LPG gas have been zero rated for VAT, while VAT for all other commodities and services has been cut from 14% to 12%.
