Pay-slip in pocket, man commits suicide

Occupants of Botswana Housing Corporation (BHC) flats in Maruapula were left in shock yesterday morning when a man suspected to be a soldier was found hanging from a tree near the estate.

The commander of Gaborone Central Police Station, Superintendent Modisaotsile Bonang said the 22-year old man was spotted by a police officer who was en-route to Old Naledi Police Station. The officer was about to take a taxi to work when she spotted the dead man hanging from a tree by the roadside. She immediately reported the matter to her colleagues. "According to our preliminary investigations, he may have committed suicide in the morning," said Bonang. The police suspect that the 22-year old was a government employee from a pay-slip found in his pocket.

Bonang said the man used a belt and shoelaces to hang himself. Some officers at the scene said the deceased is a Botswana Defence Force (BDF) soldier but Bonang would not immediately confirm the claim. One of the officers stated that the pay-slip was from BDF.
