SEHITHWA: Police here are investigating two separate cases in which two elderly men ended their lives in a bizarre fashion within a space of a week. It is reported that one of the victims, aged 58, cut his life short by fatally shooting himself in the chest.

The events were confirmed by Sehithwa Police Station Commander, Nshaki Mabophiwa, in an interview with Mmegi Online. He stated that the victim had visited his aunt at the cattlepost in Tswelenyane where he found the gun and killed himself. "On January 12, the man found no one at the cattlepost and it is said his aunt was in Namibia at the time," Mabophiwa explained.

"He managed to get inside the house and stumbled upon a 3006 rifle which he used to shoot himself. It was reported that the gun belongs to his aunt," he added. Another suicide incident occurred at Makakung cattlepost on January 14 and it involved a 61-year-old man. Mabophiwa said the man left his family behind early in the morning. "The man woke up at 5am and gave his phone to a 77-year-old man saying to him that he should expect a call as he was going to a funeral," the station commander said. About 30 minutes after the man left, Mabophiwa disclosed that he saw the man hanging from a tree near their home.
