MAHALAPYE: The body of a 24-year-old man who was reported missing following the flash floods in Mahalapye on Tuesday, has been found after an intensive three-day search by rescue teams and members of the public.

Police say the body was found Friday night at around 9pm.

No16 district officer commanding, senior superintendent Nicholas Kadiatla, told MmegiOnline that the body was discovered buried in the sand in Mahalapye River.

"His body was discovered buried in sand in the river yesterday around 9pm near the graveyard site. “We had to pump out the water to take out his body. “We will hand over the body to the parents today for burial," Kadiatla said.

Kadiatla said according to eyewitnesses, the victim drowned in the shallow trench that leads into the river on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Kadiatla said they have completed the postmortem on a 15-year-old boy whose body was found on Wednesday. The teenager and the 24-year old were reported missing on Tuesday following the heavy downpours that also claimed the life of a three-year-old child.

The flash floods also left 28 houses totally destroyed and submerged in water with members of the affected families needing alternative shelter.

Kadiatla said it is no longer dangerous to travel around the town as the water has subsided.
