The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has shortlisted four attorneys to replace the outgoing Justice Singh Walia who has reached the retirement age of 70. Mmegi has it in good authority that the Gaborone High Court judge Walia’s contract was set to end on December 31, 2016, but has been extended by another six months to allow him to complete matters already before him.

The JSC advertised a post of a High Court Judge in August, which reportedly attracted so many applicants from the legal fraternity. Mmegi has learnt that amongst the short-listed candidates are Itumeleng Segopolo, Otto Itumeleng, acting Judge, Godfrey Radijeng and Thato Mujaji.

Segopolo has been a lawyer for 29 years and will be trying his luck for the second time. The last time was in 2013 when the JSC had instead recommended Godfrey Nthomiwa to President Ian Khama to appoint latter as the Judge. In September 2015, Radijeng was appointed the acting Judge at the Lobatse High Court. The appointment followed Khama’s suspension of four High Court Judges, Key Dingake, Modiri Letsididi, Mercy Garekwe and Ranier Busang over allegations of misconduct. Radijeng, a former University of Botswana (UB) law lecturer, is a Director of Compliance and Monitoring at the Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority (BOCRA).
