Churches vow to wed Batswana while young

Marriage age in Botswana will soon get younger and younger as churches and other religious organisations in the country move to wed Batswana early to combat the spread of HIV and AIDS.

Traditionally Batswana men wait until they on the wrong side of 30 or even 40 to wed, but religious organisations have vowed to tackle this phenomenon and get people to wed whilst they are still young.

The 10 religious organisations that include Islam, Christianity, Bahai, Hindu have come up with a document detailing how they will enforce early marriages, as well as wedding cohabiting partners. The organisations have also bound themselves to establishing youth funds to help the young couples marry.
