The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has confirmed the passing of former Member of Parliament (MP) for Serowe North, Kgotla Autlwetse.

The party announced that it will only release an official statement after fully consulting with the former MP's family.

BDP Communications Officer Tumy Modise told MmegiOnline this morning: "The party, through the Party President and Secretary-General, is currently in communication with the family. It is only after their meeting that they will announce the send-off plans for Rre Autlwetse."

"It may be too early for the family to release the burial plans, but the party shall be guided by the family. The party will be holding a memorial service for Rre Autlwetse, possibly around Thursday, depending on the family’s agreement,” Modise stated. “The BDP will release an official statement on the passing of Rre Autlwetse shortly after the meeting with the family.”

Autlwetse, who also previously served as Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, died late yesterday evening at a private hospital in Gaborone.

His nephew, Kabelo Kgwaneng, also confirmed Autlwetse’s passing to MmegiOnline. “It is true that we lost our uncle yesterday after a long illness. He had come to Gaborone for a routine check-up, and the medical team advised that he be admitted. He was hospitalised for a week until his passing late in the evening. His body will be transported to Serowe tomorrow,” he said.
