The African National Congress (ANC) has issued a statement of condolences following the passing of the founding president of the Botswana Congress Party (BCP), Michael Dingake.

Dingake passed away Sunday afternoon at the age of 96.

“His legacy as an internationalist who wholeheartedly embraced the struggle for freedom in South Africa and across the continent will forever be remembered,” the statement reads.

Dingake’s connections with the South African political party date back to the apartheid era, and he was part of the stalwarts who fought for the neighbouring country’s liberation.

“Dingake’s commitment to the cause of liberation was unwavering, despite enduring arrest, torture, and a lengthy imprisonment of 15 years at Robben Island. His resilience in the face of adversity inspired generations of activists and freedom fighters,” the ANC said.

Dingake was pivotal in establishing the base for Umkhonto we Sizwe and ANC underground operatives.

“His dedication to the fight for social justice remained unyielding and unrelenting throughout his life,” the statement further reads.

Meanwhile, according to the family spokesperson, Martin Dingake, daily prayers will be held starting today from 5pm to 6pm in Mogoditshane.

A memorial service will be held on April 13 at 9am at Notwane Grounds, whilst the funeral will be hosted on Saturday.
