The annual Christian-based beauty pageant, Miss Hope will kick off with a Trashion Show tomorrow at Mantlwaneng Theatre in Gaborone.

The pageant organiser, Tlhatlogo Sengawane told Arts & Culture that the Trashion show features the designs of recycled materials, body painting and ramp walking by contestants.

She explained that Hope Pageants in Botswana promote waste material recycling, creative thinking and problem solving.

“The objective of the show is not only to induce creativity but also to raise awareness that even the most desperate of situations can be improved through self-belief and total dedication towards success.

The contestants have to design and create their own attire depending on a given theme from waste materials they collect,” she said.

Sengawane added that the competitors will also have an opportunity to showcase their own special talents like dancing, singing, or creative arts. She said a local fashion designer, Mavis Mtonga would be featured at the Trashion show by showcasing her flourishing designs while the talented artist, Prince Tom will exhibit his body art on the contestants.

Furthermore, the pageantry will also host a bootcamp where contestants would have an opportunity to appreciate their roots and culture from August 9 to 11, 2019.

According to the organiser, the bootcamp is meant to embrace Setswana culture, as it is a basic foundation for the growth of any individual seeking a long lasting impression in their society.

She explained that selected members of the community would educate young women in Kumakwane on the nitty-gritties of botho, botswerere and bonatla.

The pageant grand finale will be held on August 30 at Mantlwaneng Theatre.

The queen will be crowned looking at the summary of all events that took place after the Trashion Show, bootcamp and adjudication of projects.

It will follow a dress code theme and also have an evening gown walk.

The winner will represent the country at the Miss Hope International pageant to be held in South Africa this December.

Hope Pageant is a Christian-based pageant focusing on community service. The pageant is a system or platform for women and children, who are passionate about making a significant difference in their communities, aspire to touch the lives of others and be a positive role model.

Categories for Hope Pageants are Miss Pre-Teen Hope (9-13 years of age), Miss Teen Hope (14-18) and Miss Hope (19-27 single young women).
