After being denied bail on numerous occasions, rape accused Samuel Selolwane’s quest for freedom continued this morning as he turned to the Lobatse High Court pleading for bail.

Selolwane is charged with raping a 13-year-old girl back in January at Oodi village in Kgatleng District. He is charged alongside the 13-year-old’s mother and a friend of the mother who is the third accused in the matter. Both Selolwane and the mother of the teen victim remain in custody while the friend is out on bail. Appearing for a status update today before the Broadhurst Magistrate's Court, the state prosecutor, Seeletso Ookeditse, revealed that they had received papers stating that some proceedings particularly of bail application have been referred to the High Court.

“We have received a communication dated October 14th from the defence that some proceedings have been moved to the High Court, so we, therefore, ask for a new date and ask that Selolwane and the other accused (the mother) further be remanded,” Ookeditse said. Following Ookeditse submissions, Magistrate Linah Oahile-Mokibe proceeded to ask Selolwane’s attorney, Obonye Jonas if he had anything to say but he said nothing. Both the mother and the friend who are representing themselves also did not say anything. Oahile-Mokibe set the matter for January 21st, 2025 at 8:30am.
