A need to lead by example

We have long been hearing from the Water Utilities that it is owed huge sums of money, a substantial part of this debt being inherited from the Department of Water Affairs.

Now we have been again updated by Matida Mmipi, the face of the WUC to the rest of the world, (Mmegi 5 February) that individuals, government and businesses in fact, owe P301 million to the WUC.

We cannot name those who owe, she said, but yes, we are owed a lot of money by schools, hospitals, clinics and many other different government offices. We have resolved to disconnect all those who owe, she said. She agreed that the WUC cannot disconnect places like hospitals but said that ‘we have discussed the issue of unpaid bills at the highest levels and they know that they have to pay.’
