Solution needed for Hatsalatladi cracks

The persistent and worsening ground fissures in the village of Hatsalatladi, located 40km north of Molepolole, have become a cause for grave concern.

Despite the residents’ relentless struggle and enduring fears, government has yet to provide a clear and comprehensive solution to this alarming issue. For decades, the villagers have lived under the shadow of these ominous cracks, fearing the possibility of the earth swallowing them whole. This fear is not unfounded, as the damage extends beyond psychological distress to homes, fields, and ultimately, the livelihoods of the community. The villagers find themselves trapped in a cycle of fear and uncertainty.

What makes this situation even more disheartening is the lack of concrete answers from the authorities. The Department of Geoscience conducted research in 2022, raising hopes amongst the residents. However, to date, no feedback has been provided. The abrupt announcement by the Land Board to halt new plot allocations, without any formal communication, has only added to the confusion and frustration.
