A call for calmness in Thamaga

The unfolding drama surrounding the chieftainship in Thamaga has revealed a deep-seated division within the community, emphasising the need for dialogue, respect for tradition, and adherence to legal protocols.

As tensions rise and factions emerge, it's crucial for relevant stakeholders to step forward and broker peace, ensuring the integrity of Thamaga's customs and the rule of law are maintained.

The recent meeting called by Kgosi Kgari II, prompted by an instruction from the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, highlighted the rift within Morafe over the rightful heir to the chieftainship. With Bone Gobuamang, the daughter of the late Kgosi Gobuamang Gobuamang, and Matshego Gobuamang, her uncle, vying for the throne, the community is at a crossroads.

Amidst this contention, it is crucial to reiterate the importance of respecting law and custom in resolving this matter. While Gobuamang (Bone) and her sisters assert their birthright to the throne based on tradition, proponents of Matshego argue for a merit-based approach, stating that a name was always decided on. In the clash of opinions, it is paramount for all parties involved to refrain from taking sides and resorting to conflict. Instead, Thamaga's leaders and residents must come together in the spirit of unity and cooperation, focusing on finding a solution that serves the best interests of the entire community.

At the heart of this call for peace is the recognition that Thamaga's future prosperity hinges on its ability to navigate through this tumultuous period with grace and dignity. It is incumbent upon all stakeholders to uphold the values of mutual respect and understanding, setting aside personal interests in favour of the collective good.

Furthermore, it is essential to establish a transparent and inclusive process for determining the rightful heir to the chieftainship. This process should be guided by legal principles and traditional values, ensuring that the decision reflects the will of the entire community. By respecting both law and custom and fostering an environment of dialogue and cooperation, we can overcome this challenge and pave the way for a brighter future for our village and its inhabitants. Given the gravity of the matter, we commend authorities for intervening and hope a solution will be found soon. Dikgosi play a vital role in the daily lives of Batswana, and it is only fair that Thamaga also has its substantive chief with whom they can plan to take the village forward.
