BURS tackles low tax compliance

The Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS) is rolling out a public education campaign and mobile truck access, in a bid to improve flagging individual tax returns which last year were estimated at just 54%.

The tax season kicked off this week, with the BURS urging all eligible taxpayers to file their returns for the year which ended on June 30.

However, poor compliance rates have dogged the individual tax filing period, with just 38,000 returns filed last year, from the 70,000 expected by the tax collector.

We have all seen the pictures and heard the stories of broken windows, unreliable water and electricity, topped by classrooms that are not fit for proper learning. The establishment of the Education Infrastructure and Management Company Ltd (EIMC) signals that authorities are finally ready to take this problem seriously. We must commend the government for this initiative....
