BEDIA and Mozambique identify partnership areas

Agriculture, mining and tourism have been identified as strategic to fostering business partnerships and diversifying the economies of Botswana and Mozambique.

Speaking at the official opening of a business seminar between the Botswana Export Development and Investment Authority (BEDIA) and its Mozambican counterpart Centro de Promocao de Investmentos (CPI) in Gaborone yesterday, the High Commissioner of Mozambique to Botswana, Tiago Castigo said both countries have conducive environments for doing business.

Both economies, he said, give priority to agriculture, mining and tourism because these sectors have considerable growth potential. Tiago said agriculture is of the utmost significance as an assurance of food security in the region.  Food security is one of the issues that the region is currently working hard to tackle. At a February 5 regional food security meeting in Kinshasa, DR Congo,  it was said the overall food security situation in southern Africa for 2009/10 is favourable, with a regional cereal surplus of 476, 000 metric tonnes compared to a deficit of 1.78 metric tones in 2008/09.
