Lobatse-based Nihon Karate Kyokai Botswana is on ambitious plan to improve its annual Gashuku and tournament as a way of attracting more entries from Southern Africa. Sensei Dr Keone Kgorotlhe told MmegiSport that the just-ended Gashuku, which means a training camp in Japanese, was in its third year.

He said during the first edition held in 2021, two students graded for first Dan black belt, two for second Dan black belt and one student qualified as an examiner (licence to grade locally).

Kgorotlhe explained that in 2025, two students graded for first Dan black belt, one of them is a member of JKA Botswana, one graded for third Dan black belt, and they also introduced the JKA Closed Championship, a tournament run in the JKA traditional way. “The Japan Karate Association (JKA) is one of the oldest global Shotokan karate organisations in the world. JKA aims to promote improvement of its skills and self-discipline by research and instruction of Karatedo,” he said.

Exercise extra caution!

Unfortunately, petty thieves tend to be more vicious around this time as they also prepare for the festive season. Culturally, many Batswana go home for the holiday, and petty thieves are amongst those who go home. Burglaries, car break-ins, and attacks on unsuspecting pedestrians seem to be on the rise! That is not all, as scammers continue to take money from pensioners as well as other Batswana who may fall prey to their unscrupulous tactics....
