At just 19, Lesika Motswagole may not be the most imposing figure on the karate mat, but there is little that is diminutive about her ambition.

Over the weekend at Al-Nur School in Gaborone, the pint-sized karateka stood tall amongst 231 athletes at the Botswana Shito Ryu Federation’s annual Open Karate Championship, dominating the female -55kg category.

It was another statement of intent from an athlete whose rapid rise has already taken her onto the continental stage.
