The engines have warmed up for the 2024 Botswana Motor Sport (BMS) National Off-Road Championship and competitors have been teased with eye-watering prizes for the Khawa Off-Road Desert Fun Race.

The race forms part of the Khawa Dune Challenge and Cultural Festival that will be held on May 3–4 at Khawa Village in the Kgalagadi District. The Khawa Off-Road Desert Fun Race, however, is not part of the BMS Championship. The competitors utilise the race to build on some time on the terrain while Khawa also offers a platform to prepare for competitive racing.

This week, the Botswana Tourism Organisation added an incentive to this year's edition as the organisers have offered the largest prize money payout in motorsport. The local motorsport scene has over the years been starved of sponsors and riders have not been rewarded for their performances on the bike. The car section carries the biggest prize with P40,000 on offer for the winners. The runners-up will pocket P25,000 while the third-place finishers will walk away with P15,000. In the special vehicles, the winners will take home P25,000 while the second and third placed will pocket P15,000 and P10,000, respectively. The prizes are slightly lower in the highly contested bike section but remain the highest in the sport. The Senior Bikes Cheetah category winners will take home P15,000 as second and third-place finishers get P10,000 and P7,500 respectively.

Whilst the Police chief’s plea is rightly directed at parents, the root of this emergency runs deeper, demanding a collective response from every corner of our community. Marathe’s observations paint a picture of neglect with children left alone for...
