FRANCISTOWN: Gaborone United (GU) were over the weekend confirmed champions for the 2025-2026 FNB Premiership but not in the fashion they would have scripted. The Reds stumbled to a 2-0 defeat against TAFIC at the Francistown City Council Stadium on Saturday afternoon, missing the chance to seal the title on their own terms. Instead, the champagne moment arrived from Galaxy Stadium, as second-placed Jwaneng Galaxy dropped points in a goalless draw against Sua Flamingoes.

Coming into the match, GU needed just three points to mathematically wrap up the title with four games to spare. On paper, it looked routine, in reality, it was anything but TAFIC, fighting for survival and playing on a difficult surface, flipped the script.

GU head coach, Sean Connor did not hide behind excuses but pointed squarely at the conditions, describing the pitch as a decisive factor in the contest.
