The much-anticipated school sport negotiations between government, the Botswana Teachers Union (BTU), and the Botswana Sectors of Educators Trade Union (BOSETU) are far from over. School sport was suspended in government schools in 2020 following budget constraints, as the government failed to pay teachers’ allowances.

Despite the negotiations dragging on, school sport was relaunched in 2025, but failed to take off.

Speaking to MmegiSport, BOSETU lead negotiator Moffat Bagani revealed the parties were scheduled to meet on Tuesday, but the meeting did not take place after the BTU team became engaged in the afternoon.

Gov't, unions must find common ground

The situation is exacerbated by the ruling party’s admission that some of its most important election promises remain unfulfilled. This is not the change many Batswana had expected. The UDC was elected into power on a strong promise to improve lives, create jobs, protect workers and repair public services. It is therefore, not enough for the party to point only to new ministries, policies and long-term plans. These may be necessary, but...
