Russell Withey was an unknown talented cricketer just four weeks back. The tall fast bowler announced his arrival on the big stage in grand style as he thrilled with both the ball and bat during the ICC Division 7 tournament,which ended in Gaborone last week.
His height ensures the right-handed bowler extracts descent bounce and he sticks to a perfect line and length.
Since selectors got to know that Withey was eligible to play for Botswana, they have not hesitated to throw him in the deep end. And Withey equally accepted the opportunity with glee, snaring four wickets on his One Day International debut against Ghana to return his best bowling figures of 4/24 in a winning start.
It is a clear signal that the government’s purse is empty and that our own behaviour has left veterinary officials fighting with one hand tied behind their backs. We have been here before.
